Behind the Smile 2018

Behind the Smile 2018, is an event not to be missed!

October 12, 2018  at Dee Why RSL Club, 6:30pm – 12 midnight

The media has done a pretty good job of raising awareness of mental illness, however equity of funding is not on par with that of physical health and there is a lack of treatment options. All funds raised will be going to the not-for-profit, grassroots organisation Australians for Mental Health. You can read more about them here

One in five Australians aged 16-85 suffer from mental ill health in any one year. Mental illness is the 3rd highest cause of disability in our country, and the rate of death by suicide is almost 3 times the road toll.

The people sharing their experience of mental illness at this years’ event are:

Stuart Baker – husband of Annette Baker, founders of Survivors of Suicide and Friends. In 2011 their 15 year old daughter, Mary, took her own life after a three year battle with an eating disorder. They also started The Winter Solstice event and their aim is to bring the subject of suicide and mental illness into the public forum to be addressed without shame or stigma.

Patrick O’Connor – former executive in the Life Insurance industry. He suffers from PTSD, MDD and Severe Anxiety, which ended his executive career. Patrick was recently featured on the ABC 7.30 report and his passion is to see the Disability Insurance sector, evolve into being a financial stable, compassionate and financially significant sector of the Mental Health industry.
